Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu resumed normal legislative duties at the National Assembly complex on Tuesday, months after his incarceration at the Kuje correctional centre.
The former Governor arrived the Senate wing of the nation’s parliament at exactly 9:00am amidst Cheers from numerous legislative staff and security agencies.Kalu exchanged pleasantries with his colleagues and acknowledged greetings from other well wishers.
Speaking with Journalists before he proceeded to join his colleagues at the inner chamber, Kalu described his experience as an occurrence of fate , he expressed his gratitude to God and called for thanksgiving.
Responding to questions on the expectations of his constituents , Kalu said ” My people know that I was an action Governor and zina also going to be an Action Senator”.
The members of the Red chamber erupted in joyous mood as they sighted their colleague they took turns to exchange pleasantries with him.
After plenary Senator Orji Kalu was accompanied to his office alongside the Senate leader Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi and his Deputy Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
Senator Kalu was released after 6 months of incarceration at the Kuje Custodial Centre.
His conviction was, however, nullified by the Supreme Court on May 8th . A seven-member panel of the apex court, in a unanimous verdict delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, invalidated the conviction.
Following the nullification of his conviction by the Supreme Court, the former governor filed an application at the federal court seeking an order for his release from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Kuje, Abuja.
Justice Mohammed Liman of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of Orji Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
This is a very important development in one of the Nigerias political journey to greatness, Senator OUK as popularly know is a man of the people, no matter what he did in an alledged corrupt practices while holding on as governor of Abia State more than 20 years ago and his immense contribution in politics, business and philanthropic works across the country, he doesn’t deserved ill treatment from his rival politicians that resulted to his incarceration. He is a detribalized Nigeria, he has friends all over the country, his qualities as a leader are immense.
