Three persons have been arrested for allegedly attempting to vandalize a 300KVA distribution substation property of Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) at Akwa-Ukwu, Nnewi District, Anambra State.
The suspects identified as Uchenna Ncheta, from Ebonyi State; Chinedu Eze, from Ihiala, Anambra State and Chuks Michael, from Abia State, were apprehended by members of vigilance group.
Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, in a statement said the suspects were handed over to the Orba Police Division and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka, Anambra State for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
He expressed worry over continued attack of EEDC installations in the South-East by some unscrupulous elements; noting that such ugly trend undermine efforts by the company to improve its service quality to customers.
He further said that investigations revealed that the trio were suspected to have masterminded last month attack on Ibollo 500KVA distribution substation at Oraifite, Anambra State.
“Since the beginning of this year, the rate of vandalism across our network has been on the rise, as over 120 distribution substations have been attacked, and items worth millions of Naira vandalised.
“Some of the items usually vandalized includes: armored cables, intermediate cables, feeder pillars units, transformer oil, bare conductors, among others,”Ezeh stated.
