Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, yesterday disclosed that a former minister for Petroleum, Diezani Alison Madueke’s jewellery in their custody are worth N14. 460 billion ($80 million)
At the ongoing public investigative hearing of the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee on Recovered Loot and Assets of Government, Bawa also disclosed that the money, running into billions of Naira, recovered from a former boss of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) was intact and in their custody.
Responding to a question, he explained that the EFCC engages in plea-bargain because the administration of social justice provides principles for it, saying it is only applied on those who show remorse when caught.
On why they’re yet to dispose forfeited assets, which could fund the budget instead of borrowing, Bawa blamed the delay on court processes and procedures. He explained that the EFCC has established new units, such as operations, intelligence and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for diligent prosecution of its mandate.
Besides, he said they’re digitalizing its processes/operations for quick accessibility of records and documents for effective delivery of its task.
