Renowned journalist Dele Olaniyi has commended Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for his decision to ground his private jet in response to the worsening economic situation.
Kalu, who represents the Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, explained that he halted the use of his private jet due to the rising cost of fuel. He noted that the financial strain was also impacting his ability to increase the welfare of his employees in Nigeria and other West African countries.
“Honestly, I have stopped using my private jet since August 2, 2024. I will continue this until we resolve the salary discrepancies for workers in Nigeria and West Africa. With the cost of fuel and other expenses, I have grounded the jet to focus on other business ventures for oil companies,” Kalu stated.
He further revealed his plans for future travel, saying, “I plan to continue this way. Don’t ask me again—there are commercial planes available, and I will use them, by the grace of God.”
In response to Kalu’s statement on Sunday, Olaniyi praised the senator’s action as both inspiring and worthy of imitation by other wealthy Nigerians to improve the welfare of their workers.
“I saw Senator Kalu’s video about grounding his private jet to support his staff. It’s a great display of leadership that others should follow,” Olaniyi said.
“We shouldn’t rely solely on the federal government. Individuals need to think creatively to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in fixing the economy. I admire Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s move and encourage others to prioritize their staff’s well-being.”
