The cleanup of Ogoni community was set off June 2, 2016 by President Muhammad Buhari.
However, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) has warned that the first phase of the Ogoni cleanup, is too slow and may take up to 22 years to be completed if the work is not quickened.
They stated that there is a “seeming lack of capacity in the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), distractions and a vicious cycle of management conflicts from the Ministry of Environment are affecting the cleanup.”
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the first five years of the clean up project was set for the removal of black contaminated crude from the soil and execution of emergency measures, and 20-25years were for the restoration of environment.
HYPREP has now spent four of the first five years of the project and estimated its cost to $1billion but only have received $360M from which $44M has been spent so far.
