A pressure group, Ndi Oganiru Enugu, has called on Southeast governors and ECOWAS to do everything possible to secure the release of the former deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu from detention over his alleged organ harvesting trial in a UK court.
Led by their president Engr. Jude Asogwa Chinedu, the group pointed out that Ekweremadu wrote that he was sending the young man in question to the UK for medical assistance that would save his daughter from the pangs of death and wondered why he should be held and vilified.
Chinedu in a press statement on Thursday said the embattled Ekweremadu is their grand patron, while calling on the South East governors to act fast and “find a way of getting our patron His Excellency Prof Sen Ike Ekweremadu CFR (IKEOHA GLOBAL) out of detection in the UK.
“It baffles us that till now Enugu state has not called an emergency meeting of South East governors forum and southeast stakeholders meeting to find a way of approaching the federal government to bail an illustrious son and its senator.”
The group said Enugu State government was not doing enough with regard to ensuring his release from detention. “With all due respect we need the state to take the bull by the horn because we know that if the reverse was the case, it will not be like this.
“We appeal to all sons and daughters of the south east to wake up and know that Ikeoha has been fighting the cause of Igbo Nation. It’s on record that Ikeoha gave out scholarships to over 10,000 sons and daughters of Ndi Igbo through Ikeoha Foundation.
“Ikeoha has assisted our people countless times to get Federal jobs. It is also on record that Ikeoha is the only senator in the south east that his constituency projects can be compared with the state governments.
“We also call on the attorney general of the federation to use the same process they used in getting a Nigerian lady arrested for drug re-elected offence or are we not all Nigerians or does it mean that some are more Nigerian than others.
“We also call on ECOWAS as a matter of urgency to call on the UK to release its former speaker in the person of His Excellency Prof Sen Ike Ekweremadu CFR IKEOHA. Because it’s becoming clearer that he is being held in the UK for nothing.”
Chinedu wondered how the UK government chose to be parochial on the new law on organ donation.
