Barely few weeks after donating one Billion naira as part of her support to the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, Access Bank on thursday sacked several workers and slashed salaries of retained staff.

The affected workers, reported to be more than 800, cutting across branches of the bank throughout the country were secretly dismissed with singular reason of not needing their services any longer.

The most affected staff comprises of contract staff, office assistants, drivers, front desk tellers, account and clearing support staff, customer service officers and marketing associates

The salaries of retained staff were slashed between 20%-40% and according to the management level of each staff

A reliable source who confirmed the sack to the Nigeria daily , said that Access bank, just like other banks are facing threat of rising bad-debt levels as crash in oil prices coincide with the Covid-19 pandemic that has halted businesses

Another undisclosed source said the exercise was based on the outcome of recent staff appraisals which set a baseline to assess staff performance.

According to the source, “it’s a usual practice where those who failed to meet some key performance indicators and a scorecard spelt out at the beginning of the year are temporarily or permanently relieved of their jobs.

  1. Hope the sack does not affect only staff of defunct Diamond bank but cut across staff involved

  2. May God save us from this virus, but what those federal government used thus money for, is a big mistake from access bank director

  3. How can u sack ur staff when u made N40billion profiit in just first quarter of 2020 as well as donating N1 billion naira to COVID-19 palaver. I hope NLC will come into this matter

  4. Were they forced to donate 1B. Is unaccounted donation more important than staff and their dependents? Banking Staff should have a union. Union should push legislation that will protect Banking Staff. Rubbish!

  5. Why did Access Bank not limit their donation to half of the amount donated and use the balance to take care of their staff who are also Nigerians. Isn’t this a case of penny wise, pound foolish ? Sad.

  6. This is just uncalled for…you make the happy by donating to the rich pocket and making the pot cry the more…can access bank convince some intelligent people do the sitting meeting to donate money for the rich corrupt Gov and put tears in the eyes of those striving…where do get want this ones to go now?

  7. This is very very dubious and malicious acts to the Access bank after making a huge profit of 40 billion naira and given a palliative of 1billion naira to the Fed Govt.
Now, what encouragement are they encouraging their customers and shareholders after sacking hundreds of their stuff and embezzling funds from the public?
The C.E.O needs to be sack as well.

  8. Slashing the staff salaries would have been the best option than donating a huge sum to the corrupt Govt and firing the poor staff.

  9. After reading this disappointing story I am compelled as concern citizen to ask the Federal Government to return the one billion naira given by Access Bank to them to sustain their workforce. It defies the law of economics and logic that the company should give away such money and still be in good stead to sack over three hundred workers of their workforce.

I call in the Federal Government on immediate return of this donated fund by Access Bank. We should save our workers as a government and not the other way round.

  10. This is a display of fiscal rascality and irresponsibility as a bank. The dismissed staff and deduction on salary shall consider approaching National Industrial Court for employment action. The overwhelming evidence should be the fund given out which was earned through their sweat as employees of the bank. The law cannot exnorate the bank, if this case is pleased well, for this stupid exuberance. Their lawyers should have advised them better.

  11. Herbert Wigwe, was not under duress for donation of N1b to Federal government to fight Covid 19 This is not the best option after donating such huge amount of money.
It would have been better to slash their salaries a little. Believe you me the general public will lose their faith in your bank soon.
Imagine the numbers of family you will put in hunger. And the rate of crime will increase in our society..

  12. Staff pruning is completely in a separate silo compared to CSR silo.
Reality is that Access was just the first bank to take this pill!
Sooner than later, other banks and firms will do so. This is just the bitter side of coronavirus pandemic and Oil headaches! Welcome to a new dawn of global recession.

  13. This is just the bitter reality of effect of the pandemic and drop in crude oil price a signal to the looming global recession. Access Bank happens to be the first to swallow the bitter pill but other banks are likely to follow soon. 14. Let’s let the asshole knows if he sack them, he too will have no job to hold on to. Bcuz we appeal to the public to close their accounts and go to better banks
