MRS. Bashir Dansule of the Upper Area Court, Kubwa, Abuja, yesterday postponed the custody suit filed by Maryam Sherif, the estranged wife of Atiku Abubakar, for the custody of their children, till October 8.

Atiku Abubakar is the son of former Vice-President with the same name.

The judge adjourned for adoption of the final written addresses by counsel to the claimant and defendant.

Sherif had filed the suit against Abubakar at the Upper Area Court, Gudu, but the matter was later transferred to the Upper Area Court, Kubwa.

The claimant is paying the court to grant her custody of their three sons.

When hearing resumed in the Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, yesterday, the defendant’s counsel, Abdullahi Hassan, presented his final witness, Lawra Kamchi, for her testimony.

Kamchi, 42, who spoke Hausa that was translated to English by a court worker, said she was a journalist working with GOTEL Communications Nigeria Limited.

After she was done, Hassan applied to close their case.

The claimant’s lawyer, Nasir Saidu, said he did not intend to call any more witnesses and would rather address the court on the point of law, based on the evidence and testimonies of the defendant’s witnesses.

Hassan objected, saying by procedure, Saidu could not address the court before them.

He said as they closed their case, they should be applying for a date to file a written address.

After taking submissions from the claimant’s and defendant’s counsel, the judge adjourned the matter till October 8, 2020, for the adoption of final written addresses by both of them.
