By Adams Obiye, Abuja
Following the statement made by Herbert Wigwe, the group managing director of Access Bank, who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, Access Bank has on Saturday, May 2, announced the closure of 340 branches nationwide.
The move according to the bank is to reduce operating costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wigwe had earlier revealed that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are 75% of the bank’s staff, most of whom are outsourced and are offering “non-essential services.
“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.
“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff.
“We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.
“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”
Wigwe, one of the principal conveners of CA-COVID; a coalition of Nigeria’s private sector against COVID-19 said the proposed measures are aimed at keeping the bank afloat in the face of the economic realities of COVID-19.
Industry watchers believe that Wigwe’s retrenchment policy affects the most vulnerable of his staffers and will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the books of the bank truly show just as his philanthropy does; that it has the capacity to cushion the effect at such a precarious moment in history.Access bank closes 340 branches

Did Federal government forced Herbert Wigwe to donate N1b to Covid 19 ?? Why sacking the staff and closing of 340 branches?
Wonders will never end. Practically sacking all the staff of former Diamond Bank by closing most of the branches. Sad one there.
If you know you do not have the capacity to donate 1billion to FG , why do you force your self to give. It is not at this time you should sack your staff.
I dnt really understand, does Herbert mean close close. Then what happens to our money. What kind of stupid statement is dis, who asked him to donate people’s money. Why did he not sell all his property nd donate d money. They should not play wit that small money I hv wit them ooh
Somebody wey Sabi
This is going to be a loss to the families that this will affect, how will dey survive at this time of covid 19
It’s very sad, why at this time of pandemic legacy that never forget to the family that affected lay by Herbert Wigwe, truly Nigerian government is Insensitive,i mean look at it collecting billion and leave your citizens surfer
I hope this closure will not affect customers money with the bank.? God will help us.
There’s no point debating about your deposit. Go there now and withdraw all you have with them NOW. The donor of that N1b has a concluded plan and knows exactly what he’s doing. All these stealing method are not new to us.
I see this as pure wickedness, just few months of pandemic panic and they re sacking their workers, what happen to them after the sack, their childrens, life and expenses, will the children’s bear hunger?
Jaga-jaga bank, the day they issued me ATM card, that was the day their ATM swallowed my card and they’ve not seen it for me ooo.
Thank God I withdrew the money I have with.
The bottom line is that the bank from the time they started buy other banks like the Intercontinental Bank and merging them together has no capacity to do such. It was fraudulently done. I HoR pe our monies and shares inherited from the time it was Intercontinental Bank, to which I haven’t received any communication since they took over, is safe?
